It’s just been announced that students on the Graduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism will be eligible to apply for bursaries offered by the The Scott Trust (owners of the Guardian Media Group). The graduate diploma is the only course in Scotland from which the Scott Trust will consider applications. Full details here

- GREEN LIGHT is the Celtic Media Festival’s strand for Media Students.
- This year the Celtic Media Festival is 30 years old – Come and celebrate with us!

Taking place in Caernarfon, North Wales from 25th – 27th March – GREEN LIGHT will be a diverse and focused programme of events covering various aspects of the media today.  We also encourage all student attendees to be part of everything the main Festival has to offer: the networking, the awards ceremonies and the socialising.

The programme is currently being finalised but sessions planned for this year include:
-       A Masterclass with Hammer and Tongs. Garth Jennings and Nick Goldsmith make up this highly successful duo who have made everything from iconic music videos (Blur, REM, Supergrass) to massive television advertising campaigns (Orange, BT). Most recently they have forayed into the world of feature film with The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Son of Rambow.

-       Getting A Foot on the Ladder. A career focused opportunity covering everything from who does what in television production to how to pitch. Learn from those who have worked their way up from the bottom to the top including Alec McPhedran of Skill Channel TV.

-       Radio Waves. With digital radio offering more and more to listeners, radio production company Dabster explain what it takes to work in this ever expanding industry.

A fee of £100 will be charged per student attending. Please note that this covers access to all festival events, daily lunches and a ticket to the gala dinner. CMF are unable to cover transport and accommodation costs. We encourage colleges and universities to subsidise students to cover all of the aforementioned costs. i-blink is a truly innovative international scriptwriting competition and film festival aimed at people who want to produce a cutting-edge short film from their scripts in 2006.

We’re giving ten winners the chance to win everything they need to turn their scripts into professional short films. Prizes for the ten winners will include loan of cameras, edit suite and accessories, training at Pinewood Studios and a copy of professional scriptwriting software FinalDraft 7. The three top films will also win cash prizes totalling £5000 as well as industry recognition.
EVERYONE WHO ENTERS THE COMPETITION WILL RECEIVE PROFESSIONAL FEEDBACK ON THEIR SCRIPTS

Upstarts! [PHOTOGRAPHS]

The University of Paisley Student Arts Showcase (Upstarts) 2006 which showcases the work of students from the School of Media, Language and Music is being held on Tuesday 6 June, opening at 6pm at the Tron Theatre, Glasgow.

Student work being showcased will include film, radio, web-based television, digital art, animation, advertising, fine art, interactive design and live music performances from Commercial Music students – including Drive-By-Argument, who were recently described by Radio One DJ Zane Lowe as ‘the future of Scottish music’. Performances will also include live sets from musicians from the University’s partner, University of Linkoping, Sweden.

The event has a heavy industry presence including representation from Alison Forsyth, Director of BAFTA Scotland; Guy Robertson of advertising agency, Guy Robertson Partnership; installation and video artists, Jim Lambie and Steven Sutcliffe; writer and actor, Stuart Hepburn; and River City actress, Alison McKenzie.

Robert Sutter of the School of Media Language and Music said: “Upstarts is a hugely important event as it gives our students the chance to showcase their work to leading industry players.

“With a high percentage of our final year students exhibiting at the event members of the public and industry representatives will get the chance to learn about exciting range of work our students undertake as part of their studies.”

The exhibition will continue until Thursday 8th June and is open to the public from 10am-5pm.

Congratulations to Vanessa Pope (4th year, Cinema)!
Her play ‘Shotgun Wedding’ will be staged at this year’s Westend Festival in Glasgow.

Vanessa’s work will be showcased alongside the work of five other emerging Scottish based writers as part of the ‘New Writing/New Worlds’ festival.
