Artists and Scientists Working in Harmony

January 20, 2006

For those of you who have just taken the Becoming Posthuman and for other budding science communicators and artists, the following might be of interest to you:

Artists and Scientists Working in Harmony
Wednesday 25 January: Marianne Greated & Professor Clive Greated

The drawing of rigid demarcation lines between the arts and the sciences is a fairly recent phenomena. Academics in the early learned institutions thought of themselves as scholars, rather than scientists or artists, with an open mind to new ideas from all fronts. It is now
increasingly recognised that segregating professions and academics into rigid compartments can lead to the stifling of initiative and original ideas and there are many new initiatives being set up to try to break down these barriers.

This talk is primarily about two such projects; the COAST and SOUND exhibitions but more generally about the way in which artistic and scientific ideas can move forward together.

Clive Greated is Professor Emeritus in the School of Physics at The University of Edinburgh and Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Both his teaching and research have strong links with the arts, notably through his two books on musical acoustics but also through his recent work on colour and his contributions to public outreach exhibitions.

Marianne Greated is an artist based in Glasgow. She has exhibited throughout Scotland and internationally since graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1998. She was co-director/ curator of artist-run, moving gallery space, Switchspace and co-curated the finale of the Machinsta Festival. She has been working on science and art projects since 2001 and to further her work in this field has begun a practice/theory based PhD jointly between Edinburgh College of Art and The University of Edinburgh.

7pm – 9pm
Wednesday 25 January
Centre of Contemporary Arts (CCA),
350 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow

Free entry but space is limited, please book in advance by emailing
